Michael Jackson Private Burial set for September 3, 2009

I cannot believe the City of Los Angeles is requiring a permit for a private burial which forced the Jackson family to r0e-schedule from the original date set for Michael's birthday. (August 29th, 2009)

The Los Angeles Police department is also trying to get money from the Jacskon estate for the security they provided during the Staples Center event. If the Jackson Family had to pay for the security they should have been able to call the shots like being able to allow fans to watch the event outside of the Staples Center on big screens. The police did not allow any of the fans to get even a block radius of the memorial and I know that the Jackson family did in fact want the fans to be allowed to say goodbye formally to Michael. If the city required money and permits they should have thought about that at the time and notified them before hand - the event has passed and they cannot claim they require payment a month after the fact...

The estate should be allowed to hire private security for the private service..if it is on their dime they should not have to deal with public officials pushing back the fans that supported Michael all of these years.

I am outraged and upset when I think of how much Michael contributed to the economy, selling newspapers, headlines, and product - sometimes at the expense of his emotional health. His passing affected the world and the world should be able to mourn his passing without harassment from the police..and yes the police do harass the public.

I am so sorry that the Jackson Family has to deal with this and I hope that they do not pay one cent to the city of Los Angeles... attention city of los angeles - stop being so greedy and show some respect...

"I was hired by Michael Jackson and his attorneys to make a video tour of Neverland Ranch to be used at the trial," Nimmer tells our own Victoria Recano. "I did go in Michael's personal bedroom, his bathroom, his changing area, closets area. … Essentially I had unprecedented access to Neverland."

Nimmer worked as a filmmaker for the Jackson defense team during the 2005 child molestation trial, and in the DVD 'Michael Jackson: The Untold Story of Neverland,' the public can now finally view never-before-seen footage shot for the jury's virtual Neverland Tour.

"He seemed frail, but he also seemed very alert and normal, very unassuming," says Nimmer of his observations of Jackson. "Maybe what surprised me most [of Neverland] was it was kind of like a regular-looking Beverly Hills mansion … [with] outlandish antiques. It was wall-to-wall antiques and wall-to-wall mementos that he either had sent to him or gathered. Also books everywhere. He [was] apparently a voracious reader."

The sudden death of Michael Jackson has created so much heartache and pain all over the world.
Brie Brazleton, best friend and survivor of the La Conchita Disaster,
called me at 3:00pm and told me Michael Jackson was dead...
we both were on the phone shocked and stunned in disbelief.
I wanted to cry, but just like the time and temper of the La Conchita Disaster,

I had to urgently get to work.

Although I have two unpaid speeding tickets in Los Angeles; I did what I do best and in minutes
was at havenhurst with Larry looking at the faces of the devastated fans crying
outside of the Jackson House...like everyone else we didn't know what to say.
There was a rush of reporters at every location left with traces of Michael...
there were times I felt overwhelmed at the press-ing questions thrown out to larry and I
about out reaction, prying at details about Neverland Ranch, testifying at the trial,
and everything else we had done.

The day he died my sister came over shocked ...we had just said goodbye to our father 18 months ago
and now we lose someone else who was a powerful inluence in our lives
in the lives of every other son and daughter.

CNN stated that he had a heart-attack as we stared at the television,
I leaned over whispering so that I would not be heard by the recording camera,
" you know it was probably poison from the script" She looked at me confused,
I said " you don't really think that a 50 year old man after decades of performing
and stress doesn't need pain killers..remember dad? The next night on the news
all of a sudden everyone was speculating that Michael had taken prescription drugs.....
crap..I wondered if there was a bird at my window.

Dilaudid is the pain killer used by emergency rooms..it is eight times stronger
than morphine or heroin..my father took dilaudid, I also came close to an addiction
using Dilaudid ...I wonder if he was using that type of medication
demerol is not that strong of an opiate in my opinion..

I guess it was well known that he had a problem with pain killers...
We are not going to get answers from Doctor Conrad..He was NOT Michaels regular
doctor..he was only brought in for the insuarance company exam.

day 2 with no sleep - going on 3 and i had tons of work ahead of me...

according to CNN, the doctor caring for Michael had come into the room to see MJ
was not breathing but had a slight pulse...makes me wonder - was it a heart attack
or was it respiratory depression. Think about that for a second..there have been many times
during my sleep when I am so into the vision in my head and dream I hold I stop breathing
and wake up gasping for air..I could have easily not ...I was breath-taken from the thoughts in my mind.

Tom Meserau was on CNN the morning after his death and talked with reporters bringing me to tears.
Tom straight up said how tragic it was after being found not-guilty 14 times the whole world
was still against him and now that he is dead the whole world loves him....
I hope that Tom continues to do more interviews in the months to come.
Michael's spirit was drained from the 2005-2006 trial and if it wasn't for Mesereau
constanly defending him, even after the trial, Michael would not have lasted

Interview with Larry Nimmer as he prepares to release new documentary, "The Untold Story of Neverland" months before the death of Michael Jackson

New Michael Jackson Documentary by filmmaker Larry Nimmer who was also hired by Tom Mesereau to film footage of Neverland for the 2005 trial.

MJFC Talks To Larry Nimmer

Filmmaker Larry Nimmer is planning to release a new, positive documentary on Michael Jackson soon. He developed the idea for "Michael Jackson: The Untold Story of Neverland" after having been hired by Michael Jackson's defense team during the child molestation trial in 2005. His task was to film the Neverland Valley Ranch to avoid the jury getting a wrong impression by footage taken by the Sheriff's department during a raid of the estate in 2003.

In his documentary Mr. Nimmer investigates the family of the accuser and reveals that they have "anything but a squeaky clean past." Two other culprits that he points out are the media and the Santa Barbara District Attorney's office.

Mr. Nimmer was so kind to talk to MJFC about the trial and his upcoming documentary:

MJFC: Mr. Nimmer, you can already look back to 30 years of producing entertainment and informational programming, including several Emmy nominations. But how did you initially get to film the Neverland Valley Ranch during the child molestation trial in 2005?  Larry Nimmer: "In my career I’ve done many types of things; music videos, documentaries, etc… But one of the things I’ve done is legal computer animation and video for attorneys for use in the courtroom. I’ve developed something of a specialty of creating mini movies for use in the courtroom. That could be a 'day in the life' movie, or it could be a movie that explains the manufacturing process or it could be a movie that explains someone’s life.

The first attorney that contacted me was Bob Sanger, one of Michael’s attorneys. He knew of my specialty in that field, so he hired me to do it. And then when Tom Mesereau came on board, Bob Sanger shared that information with Tom, and then I met Tom, and I started working with Tom.”  MJFC: Can you give us some details on your film for the trial? What were the main differences between your film and the footage taken by the Sheriff's department during a raid of the estate in 2003?  Larry Nimmer: "In the Sheriff’s footage it is a lot of shaky camera work, it’s going around corners, and it looks all mysterious, almost like a murder mystery. You also see a lot of the rooms with stuff all jumbled up and kind of trashed and it is hard to know whether the Sheriff had turned everything over and trashed it or if they found it that way.

I just know that when I went there everything was very neat and presentable looking. So that is one difference. Their footage looks like this could be a place where crime might go on and my footage is more this looks like a fun nice place. So that is kind of it in a nutshell."    MJFC: During the time when you were filming, did you have any personal contact with Michael Jackson?  Larry Nimmer: “No. The funny thing is when I was filming there – I filmed for about a week or so - he was living there at the time. But I never saw him when he was living there, just because the estate is big and I guess his handlers felt that he did not need to be a part of what I was doing. Although, apparently they asked his permission for me to film there. So I did not run into him at Neverland.

When I went a couple of times in the evening to videotape things at night, I was told that when I was driving by the guest bedrooms not to let my headlights point towards the guest bedrooms. My understanding was that Michael was staying in the guest bedrooms after the Sheriff’s had trashed his bedroom. He did not want to go back to his bedroom. I was aware of his presence.

And then another time I was there in the evening I drove by and I saw a lot of people around the dining room table. You could see from outside, but I did not want to stare and make him uncomfortable, so I just drove past. Then I did see and meet him at the trial when I testified. I met him in the corridor and I nodded 'Hello' a few times. And then I sat opposite of him when I gave my testimony – he was there watching.”

MJFC: What did it feel like to be in the presence of Michael Jackson?  Larry Nimmer: “I was surprised that he was taller then I thought he would be. He was more of a natural and everyday person then I thought he would be. His plastic surgery to me was kind of obvious as people say it is, but on the other hand, he looked like a normal person, too. He was not as flamboyant as I thought he would be, he was just kind of a normal person.

When I first saw him I was in a waiting room to go on to testify, and actually this is before I saw him, and I looked out the window from the waiting room and there seemed to be a boy scout outside with some medallions on his jacket. And I thought it was someone in the military. I went up to the window to look and sure enough it was Michael Jackson wearing one of his jackets. Then I went out and positioned myself in the corridor and when he came back from the bathroom I said 'Hi' to him briefly and nodded hello and so forth.

He pretty much kept to himself or kept in a private room. I went into that private room once; he had a picnic basket and a few other things in there. I guess where he waited before he went into the courtroom. It was a tiny little room, just a little bigger than a closet.”   MJFC: How do you think Michael Jackson coped under the immense pressure?  Larry Nimmer: “I think he reacted like people thought he would react. I think he took it hard and it was emotionally and physically draining for him.

The time he went to court in his pajamas he was not feeling well and the judge ordered him there. I think it was really difficult on him, but by the end was able to hold up to it, even though it showed the strain on him.

I was told at the end of the trial, just after the not guilty verdict, one of the attorney’s assistants said that Michael was probably going to have a party for the staff that helped him in his defense. I was looking forward to that but then there was not one, and I guess he was just so emotionally drained and had to hibernate and could not deal with it anymore.

I think it was very difficult on him - and I understand why – if he was found guilty he would have had to go to jail or prison . And that would have been really difficult for him after the lifestyle he was used to. Particularly if he was innocent and going, that would have been really miserable.”

MJFC: What was it like to testify yourself at the trial?

Larry Nimmer: “I testified on a couple of things. The attorney’s had me videotape Neverland to show what Neverland looks like to a typical visitor. The attorneys wanted the jury to be able to go and visit Neverland to see what it was like. But the judge ruled that the jury could not go, so then that was when my video was played.

But in a trial you can not just play a video. You have to put someone on the stand that has something to do with the video. So they put me on the stand as a legal video expert and then I played my video and I narrated it. The video does not have any sound. Typically in a video in a courtroom an expert will narrate it. So I narrated. I’d say something like “This is the entrance to Neverland", "This is the guard booth" and "This is the western side or eastern side". Then I would tell what rooms we were in.

One other thing I narrated at the trial was when I did an alarm test in Michael’s bedroom. Gavin Arvizo and his brother Star Arvizo ... who claimed that he went up the stairs to Michael’s private bedroom and that he saw Michael with his brother Gavin. But the attorney’s argued that if Star had entered the area downstairs and walked up the stairs to his upstairs bedroom, Michael would have heard it, because there is a couple of alarm bells that go off when someone is walking nearby.

So I did this alarm test – I put my camera over Michael’s bed and then I had a cleaning lady walk in downstairs and walk up the steps, and I let the jurors hear what the alarm sounds like when it is tripped. That was another thing that I testified about, doing the alarm test to show that Michael would have always known if someone was coming.

I testified for two days because I did not finish the first day, so I came back a second day and testified. I was there the same day that Larry King came to testify, but then they did not allow his testimony to the jury.  MJFC: When did you develop the plan to extend your film into the documentary: "Michael Jackson: The Untold Story of Neverland"?

Larry Nimmer: "Maybe about six months ago...I met Aphrodite Jones (author of the 2007 book 'Michael Jackson Conspiracy). Her book is about how there was a media conspiracy to make Michael look bad so that they could make more money.

I saw that she was going to be doing a book signing in my area, so I went to meet her. I thought her book was well done and I found her interesting. I made a video at her second book signing with her and Tom Mesereau and I put it on YouTube to help promote her book for her. I thought it was good to get the information about the book out.

And then I threw around some ideas for documentaries and she had tried to develop one idea for a documentary which did not pan out. Then I started thinking about documentary ideas and I wasn’t sure legally whether I could use some of my footage, so I consulted my brother who is a top copyright attorney. He said that I could use the footage under the various doctrines of the copyright law. Then I started developing the documentary basically with just footage that I had already in my office. I did not really need to go out and shoot much else – I shot a little extra stuff, including some re-creations that I have in the documentary."   MJFC: Is there already a final version of the documentary?

Larry Nimmer: "I have a final version now. The final version currently is 40 minutes. I could have made it longer but I made it this length to see if I could find a cable network or broadcaster that wants to broadcast it. I have told all of them that if they want a longer version I have more footage and I could develop a longer version.

But so far all of the cable networks that I had contacted either have not decided one way or the other, or they decided no, they do not want to do anything.

Aphrodite Jones also found that when she shopped around her documentary idea that most of the media did not want to do anything positive Michael Jackson. So I might be getting some of that same reaction. Although, I know that there are a lot of people out there that are certainly positive Michael Jackson. I should know within a few weeks if it is going to be broadcast or not. And if it is not going to be broadcast, then I will just make it available on DVD."  

MJFC: Your documentary is promoted as being pro-Michael. However, especially after the Martin Bashir debacle, Michael Jackson fans have become very cautious. Do you think the fans will get what they hope for?

Larry Nummer: “Yeah, I think so. The documentary speaks for itself. I guess the Martin Bashir documentary spoke for itself too. I’m certainly sympathetic towards Michael – I did work for his defense. I did learn from the defense point of view what happened and I also researched some from the prosecution point of view. But as the jury found, the prosecution was not too convincing. So I think the fans will be pleased with it. The fans probably would have liked more performance footage then I have and would like more interviews with Michael than I have.”

MJFC: Is it correct that you used outtakes from the Martin Bashir documentary in your own documentary, and if so, for what purpose?

Larry Nimmer: “During the trial Tom Mesereau had me edit the outtakes from the Martin Bashir documentary to show that there were a lot of things that Martin said that were sympathetic to Michael that Martin Bashir did not use. The point being that Martin Bashir did not want to show him in as good a light as he could have. So that was how I had access to the Martin Bashir outtakes.

The outtakes were actually filmed by Michael’s own videographer who just had a separate camera going from the Martin Bashir cameras during the taping sessions. They are not as professionally shot because they just wanted to have a record of what was being said by Michael.”

MJFC: What can fans expect from your documentary that they have not already seen or heard?  Larry Nimmer: “In terms of the outtakes, he (Michael) talks more about what it is like to be a celebrity, and people not treating him like a regular person. He talks about what his loneliness is like and what his isolation is like. He talks about wanting to use the childlike nature for professional purposes. He talks about a lot of things that he has talked about in other interviews – these are themes that he has often spoken about.”

MJFC: Overall, What was your opinion on the accuser Gavin Arvizo and his family?  Larry Nimmer: “It seems like he really had cancer, they really wanted his (Michael's) help, but then it seems like they used him and they turned on him when they were not having the benefit of using Neverland and his credit card as much. It seems like they just made up these stories and they were pretty good actors – all the kids and the mom.

In the video, at one point I have interviews with the Arvizo family that they made, which I do not believe have been seen at all, which were used in court. They are praising Michael saying what a great guy he is and how he has helped them and so forth. Then at the trial they claimed they (Michael's people) kept them captive and all this other stuff.

So it seems like they were just trying to pull a scam over on Michael Jackson and the media and the prosecutor’s were so anxious to get more ammunition to say that he is a child molester that everyone believed them.”

MJFC: Do you think Michael Jackson was an easy target?  Larry Nimmer: “Yes, I do think Michael Jackson is an easy target. All celebrities are somewhat easy targets, particularly the eccentric celebrities. I would say that Michael tends to be an eccentric celebrity, but I do not think there is anything wrong with being an eccentric person. In fact, I think it is refreshing in a lot of ways.

Particularly, one of the things Michael says in one of the interviews is during the settlement with Jordie Chandler, he settled it because he did not want to go to trial and have a big OJ style trial. But the settlement was a bad idea in retrospect because then it made other people think they could get money out of him too.

I do not believe he was a child molester, but I think because of settling earlier on, it made him more susceptible to being extorted by other people.”  MJFC: Many fans see prosecutor Tom Sneddon as the point for origin for the accusations and the trial. Would you agree?  Larry Nimmer: “I would say more that the point of origin would be the Arvizo family, possibly Janet Arvizo, the mom, or maybe Janet and Gavin.Then when they met with their attorney and psychologist, it seems like they may have encouraged and believed the story, and they got the story flamed up.

Then Tom Sneddon was looking for any type of evidence against Michael got involved. I do not know if he was the original origin but he sure exasperated the whole thing.”  MJFC: Do you think your documentary has the power to change people’s opinion on the subject trial and the accusations and moreover, on the person of Michael Jackson?  Larry Nimmer: “The people I have shown it to, most all of them say that they have a different impression of, particularly the trial and of Michael Jackson after seeing it. Most people are convinced that the Arvizo’s did have a bogus story, and were faking and making up stories. I think it certainly will change people’s opinions of the Arvizo family.

And I have also heard people change their opinions of the Chandler family, too. My documentary also discusses the allegations by the Chandler family and I now analyzed those as well. And people that have seen the documentary feel like those charges were probably trumped up, too.

I think it will change people’s impressions of Michael and the history of what has happened with him and young people.”  MJFC: What do you think about Michael Jackson finally performing again in London later this year? It sounds these concerts and the release of documentary will occur around the same time.

 Larry Nimmer: “I think it is great that he is doing the concerts. For me it is fortunate that my documentary will have good timing to coincide with them. I should say that I do feel guilty in capitalizing on Michael Jackson with my documentary, just like a lot of others have capitalized on him – even the Arvizo’s and the Chandler’s. In a way I feel guilty about making a documentary and I may make some money off it. I am actually planning on giving a percentage of the proceeds of the documentary – 10% of the profits to Michael Jackson charities. So I have mixed feelings about benefitting from it, but I think that it is great that he is performing again, and it is great validation that all the concerts sold out and that he still has an incredible fan base.   For me it has been really interesting, in the last week or so, since the article review was out, and then other blogs have been written about it. I find it fascinating that I am getting contacted from people in all parts of the world, sympathetic to Michael, and interested to hear from me. I have heard from people from Iran, Norway, Italy, Scotland, France and the United States. It is really cool how he has such a strong fan base. And I guess it is because of his message of love and peace, respect for kids and respect for the childlike nature.   I think it is great. It remains to be seen how he holds up to all those concerts, because my impression is that he has a fragile disposition. But on the other hand, he has performed a lot in the past, and I have heard him say in interviews how much he enjoys performing and how comfortable he feels on stage. I think it will be a good thing and it will be interesting to see just how the shows go, and who plays with him, and what songs he plays.”  MJFC: Are you planning any other Michael Jackson related projects, or any other exciting projects?  Larry Nimmer: “One project I thought that I would like to do is a documentary on Michael Jackson fans around the world. How people see him from different cultures and how he resonates with people in different places and cultures. Possibly, I would do that some point, possibly I would make another documentary someday more on him and his music, rather than focusing so much on the trial, which this one focuses on more. But I do not have any specific plans at this point. Right now I am doing some documentaries on other projects, so I am not sure at this point.”

Before wrapping up the interview, Larry Nimmer spoke about another idea he had for the DVD release of his documentary "Michael Jackson: The Untold Story of Neverland.” In addition to sharing some additional footage, he wanted to allow for fans across the world to submit video messages to Michael Jackson. Then these could be collected and assembled in the DVD extras. If Mr. Nimmer does decide to do this, he indicated that he would let MJFC know so that we can let the fans know how to submit their videos.

Defense team videographer Larry Nimmer says Michael’s more normal than we’ve been led to believe

If you think Michael Jackson is an alien, an experiment in plastic surgery, a freak with a mental disorder or a child-molester who can’t stop touching his own (and apparently everyone else’s) crotch, you’re not alone. It seems just about everyone these days, from the TV newscasters to the tabloid magazines to everyday citizens going about their lives, think the King of Pop uses his royal power for strange (at best) or evil (at worst) deeds—whether they believe the “not guilty” verdict or not.

But the Carpinteria-based videographers who worked with Jackson’s defense team on the trial say that just because In Touch and Court TV say Jacko’s wacko doesn’t mean he is. In fact, according to videographer Larry Nimmer and the two people who helped him film and edit video for Jackson’s defense team, the pale-faced, high-voiced star might not be (gasp!) a freak. And he might just be innocent too.

“I found him a lot more normal a person than he’s perceived,” said Nimmer, whose company Nimmer Legal Graphics helped Jackson’s defense team with everything from filming a tour of Neverland Ranch to editing outtakes from previous interviews to show during closing arguments.

During the process of working on these videos, Nimmer discovered that public and media perception of the pop prince may be seriously skewed. And he suspects the common suspicion that Jackson is, indeed, a child molester might be a result of the same sensationalist media and conservative culture that has most of America assuming Jackson just got away with a crime.

“My personal opinion is that no, he didn’t do it,” said Nimmer.

Nimmer’s assistant Tom Friedman agreed.

“Within about five minutes (on Neverland Ranch), I was convinced Jackson was innocent and is a generous, big-hearted person,” Friedman said.

What does Nimmer (and his team) know?

Larry Nimmer isn’t just a Jackson fan, blinded by devotion, who also happens to have some video editing skills.

Instead, he’s an upper-middle-aged multimedia producer in Carpinteria who makes his living with Nimmer Legal Graphics, a company that provides video, scale models, graphs and other visual aids for court cases. With an impressive resume that includes shooting music videos (he was doing it two years before MTV started airing them), working for the CBS TV news affiliate in San Francisco, creating numerous documentaries and overseeing the Santa Barbara Film Festival—and that’s all in addition to carving a place for himself as the premier legal graphics producer in the tri-county area—Nimmer’s the real deal: an objective, professional media producer with no personal stake in this, or any trial’s, outcome.

And his assistants were similarly un-invested in the trial or their image of Jackson. Tom Friedman, who frequently works with Nimmer on documentaries and legal videos, said he was never really interested in the pop star, but “like most people did, I thought he was a strange, potentially bizarre individual.” Another assistant, Chrissy Strassburg, said she’s always respected Jackson’s music, but distrusted his seeming insecurity and his obsession with his looks.

All made a commitment to approach their job as objectively as possible. When Friedman and Nimmer went to Neverland to film the tour, for example, Nimmer said he didn’t want to use any videographic “trickery” to create a sentimental or skewed view of the ranch. And the video they made, which showed a beautiful, rolling and surprisingly conservative estate, wasn’t just the selection of the more pleasant or normal aspects of Neverland—it was, said Nimmer and Friedman, an accurate portrayal of what it was like to be there.

“There were no weird pictures of kids, no pornographic titles on the shelves,” said Friedman. “I didn’t see anything at all that made me think, ‘If they see this, he’s going to fall.’”

The ranch

Three days of filming by Nimmer, with lots of help from Friedman and assistance on nighttime shots by Strassburg, led to a 19-minute video that jurors in the Jackson case saw. Originally, said Nimmer, Jackson’s defense had wanted to give jurors a tour of the ranch, which would not only give them a sense of Jackson’s personality and character, but would also relate directly to accusations of where and how the alleged molestation happened, or where and how the accuser’s mother said she was held against her will. But the judge wouldn’t allow it.

So since Jackson’s defense team couldn’t bring the jurors to Neverland Ranch, they had Nimmer Legal Graphics bring Neverland to the jury.

The process started with several days of visits, including all-access tours for Nimmer and his assistants. Jackson wasn’t there, since he was in court, and his kids were kept out of sight, per Jackson’s request, but otherwise Nimmer could see anything he wanted. He rode the trains on the property, visited the amusement park and the zoo, had lunch in the family dining room and peeked into the private wing of the main house, where Jackson and his kids have bedrooms.

“The prosecution made it out to be a place where only bad things happened,” said Nimmer, a tall, slender, bespectacled man with graying hair who could easily pass as someone’s science teacher. But he and his team said the mythical ranch is profoundly different than people might expect.

Yes, there are elements that are fantastical, whimsical or opulent, but for the most part, “it feels very normal, like a nice mansion,” said Nimmer. “It’s kind of a cross between Disneyland and a Montecito estate.”

The video seems to confirm this. Unlike the visions many of us might imagine—a colorful plastic landscape that would appeal to Tim Burton à la Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or a raucous, creepy, 24-hour carnival reminiscent of AI’s sin city—the ranch seems rather, well, tame. A modest gate with a low fence leads visitors onto a property of rolling lawns, idyllic lakes and ponds and lush, green trees. The real gate, up ahead, is only slightly bigger, and has only one security guard in a tower checking visitors.

Inside, there is Jackson’s house, a Tudor-style mansion in hues of browns and reds; the amusement park, which is impressive but not sprawling, all-encompassing or even, at that moment, running; the zoo, which resembles the stables and barns on many area ranches except that this one has giraffes and monkeys instead of horses and ponies; and the trains, which even seem tasteful and muted, more like enlarged model trains (which they basically are) than amusement park rides. There is a full-sized movie theater, with posters of Disney movies in the foyer and display cases full of free candy that is handed out by staff. Visitors also get freebie toys and sweets at the main train station.

But on the video, none of these elements seem anything other than ordinary. The only extraordinary thing about them is that they’re all on one property and that they seem to be made for the use of people who don’t live there.

The only thing Nimmer found a little strange was the constant music coming from speakers throughout the property. “It was kind of neutral and happy … and at first it was kind of fun, and then kind of tedious. I wonder how his kids react to it,” said Nimmer.

But otherwise, Nimmer and his team were impressed by how beautiful, tranquil and not that weird the ranch was. Especially Friedman, who’d imagined, “here’s this guy running around in his little, sad wonderland with giraffes frolicking in the fields when there’s so much poverty in the world and so many better ways to spend your money,” he said.

But once at the ranch, Friedman said it was obvious the property was made for the benefit of other people—and not to fulfill Jackson’s own stunted-childhood fantasies or to provide a backdrop for child abuse. The amusement park was clearly built on the scale for large groups of kids to visit, he said, many of whom probably arrived on the luxury bus Jackson had parked on the property, and didn’t seem to cater to any kind of one-on-one or private activity at all.

“This guy doesn’t get on his Ferris wheel every night and go whooping and screaming,” said Friedman. “I doubt very much he’s out there with a little balloon and a noisemaker riding it himself.”

In fact, the video shows a small, modest jungle gym behind the main house made of wood, the kind “you’d see in a very moderate public park, like in Carpinteria,” said Friedman. This seems to be the place where Jackson and his three kids actually spend their time.

“My guess is that he probably spends more time there with his kids than he does frolicking around the amusement park,” said Friedman. Instead, said Friedman and Nimmer, it seems clear that the park is there for the reason Jackson says it’s there: as a 700-acre fantasyland for sick and underprivileged kids who don’t have a chance to experience the real thing. After seeing it for himself, Friedman said it’s too bad Jackson gets a bad rap for something that’s so extraordinarily good.

“Even though it’s his private estate, he’s given a great deal over to the public good. Who else does that? Tom Cruise? Does Bill Gates do it? Does Steven Spielberg do it? Does Barbra Streisand do it? Turn over vast landholdings to access to people? To kids?” said Friedman. “He’s very, very unique … and he’s sacrificed his privacy to do it.”

The house

Going inside Jackson’s mansion was even more illuminating for the video team, said Nimmer. The video shows a surprisingly grown-up house, with gold ornamentation and heavy furniture inspired by traditional French royalty. The only odd touches were paintings of Jackson with children, one of him as a kind of pied piper and one of him reading to a circle of kids, and several mannequins. But the paintings only seemed strange in a narcissistic, not a pedophiliac, sort of way, agreed Nimmer’s team.

And though the prosecution tried to paint Jackson’s mannequins as something strange, Nimmer said the dolls—one of which was a life-like butler at the front door holding a real plate of cookies, while another was a child playing upside down on a chair—“seemed to me kind of playful and fun.”

Friedman agreed, saying the mannequins were “not threatening … If he’s got the money and it tickles his funny bone, why not? ... I don’t think it’s sinister or creepy or implies that the guy’s a sexual predator,” he said, comparing Jackson’s penchant for mannequins to other people’s hobbies of collecting coins or photos of dogs.

Friedman also noted that the house itself, while large, wasn’t excessively so. The rooms were human scale, he said, reasonably informal and reasonably comfortable.

“There were no grand public rooms, no mirrored ballroom where Michael, in the certain moment, would appear and come down off a large balcony,” he said. “It was more like a ranch house than a palace.”

And both men noted that there were signs of real life all over the house and the property: from Jackson’s kids’ jackets hanging on pegs in the hallway to the sound of their giggling upstairs while Friedman and Nimmer ate lunch. There were photos of the kids all over the house too, said Nimmer, but most were turned around by staff so they wouldn’t get caught on videotape—which was part of Jackson’s request to protect the privacy of his family.

Outside on the lawn, there were also tricycles that obviously had been used over and over.

“The scooters and little bicycles were battered and just regular … it showed the presence of regular little kids,” said Friedman. “He could get each of those kids a solid gold jet-propelled tricycle, but he just had regular little tricycles. It shows there’s a very human side to this guy.”

Nimmer agreed and, in fact, made sure he got shots in the video of the trikes, the jackets and even a note reading “I love you even more than that … get well soon” that Jackson’s daughter Paris scrawled to him on a chalkboard.

“I wanted to convey to the jury the fact that he is a father and they’re real kids and they have a real relationship,” said Nimmer. In addition to the items he saw around the house, Nimmer also said Jackson’s relationship with his kids was clear from the other videos and interviews Nimmer had to sort through to make the tape for the closing argument, including outtakes from the documentary Living With Michael that seemed to imply Jackson liked sleeping with boys. Those outtakes, said Nimmer, showed “how much he likes talking about his kids and how close he is to the kids … which doesn’t really ever seem to come out in the press.”

In fact, Nimmer took particular issue with the documentary, made by Martin Bashir, which showed Jackson holding hands with a boy, who later became his accuser, and saying he liked sleeping in beds with boys.

“Bashir did not include a lot of the positive stuff about Michael that was shot in the documentary,” said Nimmer.

The verdict

But when it came to deciding whether Jackson was innocent or not, said Nimmer and his team, the facts were the most important part of the trial—a component Nimmer said most of the media seemed to ignore.

“I found it surprising how the media could come up with so many stories based on so little information, when each day there wouldn’t be that much more to report on … They spend a lot of their time speculating,” said Nimmer, who still said he found media coverage—and the spectacle outside the courthouse—entertaining. It was just too bad it was at the expense of someone’s life, he said.

Nimmer said the media seemed to perpetuate the myth of Jackson as a freak, and therefore as a possible molester. And he credits a lot of that to Jackson’s childlike nature, which he witnessed mostly while editing interviews like Bashir’s. Nimmer says Jackson cultivates a childlike nature for composing his music, creating his dances and promoting humanitarian causes.

“People in our country tend to be very conservative and suspect bad intentions and in general think Michael Jackson’s a fool because he’s childlike, whereas I think it’s really refreshing,” said Nimmer. “I’m kind of upset how people automatically dismiss him because he’s childlike.”

As for the accusations themselves, Nimmer and his team said most of them just didn’t add up. For example, the accuser’s mother said she was held at Neverland against her will, without any way to leave or any idea what time it was. But Nimmer’s video shows the posh guest house the woman easily could have left, the clocks all over the property and the scores of staff—including security guards, housekeepers, an administrative team and groundskeepers—who were too numerous, and seemed too down-to-earth, to make likely conspirators or captors.

“I didn’t see any cameras in the trees, monitors on the walls, didn’t see any bloodhounds or electrified fences, any pits with sharpened stakes,” said Friedman. “She could have walked to the road and climbed over the fence.”

Another accusation was that the accuser’s brother came up the stairs to Jackson’s bedroom and saw the pop star touching the boy inappropriately. But Jackson’s defense team argued that an alarm system set up in Jackson’s private wing would’ve been triggered by the brother’s approach, thus making the story impossible (and therefore all the stories not credible)—a fact Nimmer proved with his video.

The prosecution’s claim that Jackson had a house full of porn seemed less likely, said Nimmer, when he visited Jackson’s library of 200,000 books—which ranged in topic from art history to old Hollywood to child-rearing to religion, and made up only a part of the star’s full 700,000-book collection.

And assistant Chrissy Strassburg said, after seeing video of the accuser’s mom saying how much she trusted Michael during a time when she thought the camera was off, that there was no way she could believe the woman was telling the truth about being held at Neverland. In addition Strassburg talked of Michael being a father figure for that family and a father figure for many other kids in the world.

The man

With the evidence seemingly stacked in Jackson’s favor, Nimmer, Friedman and Strassburg were relieved and reassured to know that they were working for the “right” side. And in the process, they learned even more about Jackson.

Nimmer, who only actually met the pop star once, the day Jackson thanked the videographer when he testified about the Neverland video in court, said Jackson was shy, humble, kind and “taller than I thought he would be. I thought he would be a short guy.”

From video footage, though, he and his team got all kinds of insight into the star’s life: the debilitating chiding he got from his father and cousins about his “fat” nose and bad skin, which may have led to the plastic surgery he had later in life; the young Jackson’s practice of using the money he made performing to buy candy for the neighborhood kids, which naturally extended to a place like Neverland; the way Jackson tried over and over to correct Bashir when he implied that he liked having sex with boys, when what the pop star said was “When you say the word ‘sleep,’ you said it as if it’s sexual. ‘Sleep’ is getting in bed with somebody because they don’t want to be alone when they sleep,” Strassbourg quoted.

And like the jury, they all came to a unanimous decision: Michael didn’t do it.

What’s more, they understand where he’s coming from.

“I don’t believe it’s necessarily wrong to sleep in a bed with a child,” said Nimmer, who used to share a tent with his sons and their friends on Indian Guide camp-outs. “It was kind of like a sleepover, and clearly there wasn’t anything sexual going on there.”

Friedman agreed.

“I don’t see anything wrong with him having kids sleep in his bed with him,” said Friedman, who used to look forward to sharing a bed with his grandfather during childhood holidays. “It’s a sweet gesture. I think it’s very intimate.”

The bottom line, says Nimmer, is it makes him sad that Jackson has had to go through all of this simply because he wants to give back to children and he enjoys their non-threatening company.

“It’s an incredible hoax that the accuser’s family has pulled off to, one, monopolize the life of a superstar and, two, monopolize the world media by coming up with a bogus story,” he said. “Which I believe it is. And which the jury seems to believe it was.”

The Presidency, Politics, and Pregnancy

Since Barak Obama was inaugurated as the 44th President and first black man in the white house there is once again hope in the hearts of every person in this country. Finally we have someone in office who is considered part of the minority and has directly experienced discrimination growing up with the rest of us in the working middle class. This gives us a leader with perspective and makes the possibilities for our country are endless..I know that this is what Martin Luther King was really dreaming of when he spoke at the Million Man March in 1963.

The public continues to sit and watch his actions waiting for more progressive changes to take place right before their eyes. This kind of expectation and collective pressure would drive any man to flee the very country that loves him so. Who can satisfy the desire for peace, equity, and justice from the decades of disappointment created by so many other men and their offspring?.........

hmmm.... am I talking about the history of politics in America or the history of motherhood and traumatized women in this country? (Women didn't get the right to vote until almost 100 years after black men... considering we use to have black men as our slaves it shows how much we value and respect women.)

Supreme Court Justice David Souter announced he will retiring in June and it is the President's responsibility for nominating his replacement.....The topic on everyone's tongue is surrounding the issue and protection of roe vs. wade... the freedom of choice vs. right to life. The Supreme Court has so much power and influence on society and on deciding what is considered right and wrong in our culture. Every situation and decision is circumstantial and more complicated than having just one answer to the question to be or not to be,,, guilty that is. The high rate of individuals fighting for money and power often gets overlooked when dealing any controversial topic relating to life, love and the pursuit of happiness.

What is more controversial than sex, murder, and the afterlife???

Yes...I am referring to abortion... although I don't believe it is murder but I do acknowledge that in some people's rearview mirror they look past the red light they ran just to dodge the authorities' judgement.

Before having intercourse you should always have the "what if" conversation. For example I would never date or have sex with someone that is anti-choice...not that it matters because the law says that I kill the fetus even if the father of the fetus does not want me to ..(poor guy)

Is that morally fair? just because we give birth doesn't mean we have to be responsible for the rest of the 18 years... how come we are not considering the man's feelings and the affects it will have on his life either...? you reply,, because it is the Woman's body and the Woman's choice..she is the one who has to go through the pregnancy and she the one who has to go through the abortion...if she is spiritual or religious she considers it a sin it becomes her sin and she is the one that will be eternally guilty...

In this realm pregnancy affects all people involved and if we are ever going to evolve we need consider all people equally. I can't tell you how many times the men we love so much get trapped into being a parent even though they took all the pre-cautions and had all the conversations before sex even took place.

"A Woman's body a Woman's choice" If it is the woman who is responsible and accountable for her choices and she chooses to keep the child despite the fact the man never wanted and still does not want to be a father or pay for a child.....is it fair that the court makes the man pay for the very pregnancy that he tried to prevent... not only that but he is suppose to pay an amount of money based on the woman's standard of living; depending on the amount of money he earns or has inherited the amount is unrelated to the actual cost of the child's supplies - and remember... there is no bargain hunting allowed in the courtroom!!

What about a man who has to pay child support for a child he doesn't even get to see or have a relationship with??? is it fair that the man pays money that ends up going to the woman's entertainment, luxury, overpiced clothes, alcohol and whatever she uses the money for.

OOPS.... I probably just pissed off the President and all members of the National Organization for Women - let me just say that there are in fact many circumstances where I believe parents should pay child support, for example my sister and I were both planned pregnancies and when my mom and dad got divorced my dad took full custody and care of my sister and I and my mom never paid child support once and I still think she owes us money to this day.

At the very least the court should demand monthly receipts and proof that the amount given is the amount spent on the child and if there is money left over that is less money the man needs to pay the next month.

We all know that everyone is entitled to a fair trial...but is the process of trial and the laws themselves that fair.? ... that is a whole different conversation but what I am trying to get at is how we too often award someone for continuing a pregnancy even if that means that it goes against what the lovers agreed on in the beginning. We also award the women who are often times using the child or the pregnancy as a way of trying to get back together with or control the life of the man that she cannot have. Sometimes the woman is trying to fill the void in her life and she doesn't want to accept responsibility for her choice and cannot handle the consequences of her decision.. We have to look at every case specifically with mediators and social workers before it even goes to the courtroom.

I am a woman and know that this decision is not easy because there is such a wonderful potential that occurs in the minds and hearts of the women and men that cross this path. The world would never procreate if there wasn't a powerful chemical desire to conceive and continue pregnancies once they are discovered. Women who support abortion and agree to an abortion before hand sometimes change their mind once they become pregnant and reality sets in. What about the men? Where does that leave them... there also have been times where men have changed their mind about having a baby after it is already conceived... what happens in that situation?

I worked in the recovery room with women post op. recovering from abortions and even though this procedure makes life a little easier for both parties the affects it has on the woman can be forever traumatizing. I use to write down the sentences of the women as they would come out of the procedure. Here are a few quotes from different women, "I knew exactly when the fetus was dead" "I will never forget the sound of that machine" "What if that was my last chance to have a baby" "If I ask will God will he ever forgive me" "do you think I made a mistake?" "why did he (her husband) have to change his mind" "Maybe I will see the spirit again when I die, I hope it won't be mad" ..I am planning to pull all the sentences together into the form of a poem... hopefully I will be able to read it in public without sobbing... maybe one day I will add in my own sentence, maybe not.

Men have it easier than women in so many ways....we all know that; but it is time to look at these laws that turn good men into criminals... those laws were set in place from one particular court case and does not mean they apply to all situations..most times it takes the power away from men who just want the same thing we all want, respect, fairness, honesty, and understanding. What if the tables are turned and men are the ones who got pregnant .. ..would we feel the same way about abortion, paying child support.. love and life itself is complicated and traumatic enough all we can do is try and make it easy for both people whatever the decision. If you are dealing with a pregnancy or planning to have a child you have to be honest with yourself and with your partner. You know the difference between right and wrong...

Generations of children are part the polluted environment only to procreate on accident during their attempts to heal the pain that was created not only by those that brought them into this world but also by the very people they run to hold them in the night.

For the record I have always been pro-choice and have worked diligently for many years assisting in abortions and counseling women about their pregnancy options always supporting the right to choose. I remember when I was so little I wasn't even in kindergarden yet, I was visiting my mom and she worked the overnight shift at a hospital. When she picked me up from my babysitter we rode in her truck as she started to cry. I kept asking her what was wrong and telling her it was ok and she could tell me. She cried and cried as she stared at the road as she kept driving. She then turned and looked at me, she begged me to promise her that when I grew up I would work to protect a woman's right to have an abortion. She told me what an abortion was and then told me that during the nightshift she had a young 16 year old girl come into the emergency room and bled to death on the table right in front of her. The girl's boyfriend had used a bent coat-hanger to try and kill the baby that she had in her body. He was clumsy and he went too far, since everything he did with the coat-hanger was hurting her the same amount and she trusted her boyfriend she didn't speak up. I will never forget that night, that was the first time I ever saw my mom scared, I saw her as a person and not a super-hero. I told my mother not to cry anymore and when i grew up I would learn to give abortions myself and make sure girls would always be happy safe.

Just as important as protecting the right to choose for women we also have to protect the the finances of those at risk. What will be the life choices of the Obama girl's, will their husbands or boyfriends try to get money out of them and take custody of their children just for child support?

A Code to Govern the Making of Talking, Synchronized and Silent Motion Pictures. Formulated and formally adopted by The Association of Motion Picture Producers, Inc. and The Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, Inc. in March 1930.

Motion picture producers recognize the high trust and confidence which have been placed in them by the people of the world and which have made motion pictures a universal form of entertainment.

They recognize their responsibility to the public because of this trust and because entertainment and art are important influences in the life of a nation.

Hence, though regarding motion pictures primarily as entertainment without any explicit purpose of teaching or propaganda, they know that the motion picture within its own field of entertainment may be directly responsible for spiritual or moral progress, for higher types of social life, and for much correct thinking.

During the rapid transition from silent to talking pictures they have realized the necessity and the opportunity of subscribing to a Code to govern the production of talking pictures and of re-acknowledging this responsibility.

On their part, they ask from the public and from public leaders a sympathetic understanding of their purposes and problems and a spirit of cooperation that will allow them the freedom and opportunity necessary to bring the motion picture to a still higher level of wholesome entertainment for all the people.

General Principles

1. No picture shall be produced that will lower the moral standards of those who see it. Hence the sympathy of the audience should never be thrown to the side of crime, wrongdoing, evil or sin.

2. Correct standards of life, subject only to the requirements of drama and entertainment, shall be presented.

3. Law, natural or human, shall not be ridiculed, nor shall sympathy be created for its violation.

Particular Applications

I. Crimes Against the Law
These shall never be presented in such a way as to throw sympathy with the crime as against law and justice or to inspire others with a desire for imitation.

1. Murder

a. The technique of murder must be presented in a way that will not inspire imitation.

b. Brutal killings are not to be presented in detail.

c. Revenge in modern times shall not be justified.

2. Methods of Crime should not be explicitly presented.

a. Theft, robbery, safe-cracking, and dynamiting of trains, mines, buildings, etc., should not be detailed in method.

b. Arson must subject to the same safeguards.

c. The use of firearms should be restricted to the essentials.

d. Methods of smuggling should not be presented.

3. Illegal drug traffic must never be presented.

4. The use of liquor in American life, when not required by the plot or for proper characterization, will not be shown.

II. Sex
The sanctity of the institution of marriage and the home shall be upheld. Pictures shall not infer that low forms of sex relationship are the accepted or common thing.

1. Adultery, sometimes necessary plot material, must not be explicitly treated, or justified, or presented attractively.

2. Scenes of Passion

a. They should not be introduced when not essential to the plot.

b. Excessive and lustful kissing, lustful embraces, suggestive postures and gestures, are not to be shown.

c. In general passion should so be treated that these scenes do not stimulate the lower and baser element.

3. Seduction or Rape

a. They should never be more than suggested, and only when essential for the plot, and even then never shown by explicit method.

b. They are never the proper subject for comedy.

4. Sex perversion or any inference to it is forbidden.

5. White slavery shall not be treated.

6. Miscegenation (sex relationships between the white and black races) is forbidden.

7. Sex hygiene and venereal diseases are not subjects for motion pictures.

8. Scenes of actual child birth, in fact or in silhouette, are never to be presented.

9. Children's sex organs are never to be exposed.

III. Vulgarity
The treatment of low, disgusting, unpleasant, though not necessarily evil, subjects should always be subject to the dictates of good taste and a regard for the sensibilities of the audience.

IV. Obscenity
Obscenity in word, gesture, reference, song, joke, or by suggestion (even when likely to be understood only by part of the audience) is forbidden.

V. Profanity
Pointed profanity (this includes the words, God, Lord, Jesus, Christ - unless used reverently - Hell, S.O.B., damn, Gawd), or every other profane or vulgar expression however used, is forbidden.

VI. Costume
1. Complete nudity is never permitted. This includes nudity in fact or in silhouette, or any lecherous or licentious notice thereof by other characters in the picture.

2. Undressing scenes should be avoided, and never used save where essential to the plot.

3. Indecent or undue exposure is forbidden.

4. Dancing or costumes intended to permit undue exposure or indecent movements in the dance are forbidden.

VII. Dances
1. Dances suggesting or representing sexual actions or indecent passions are forbidden.

2. Dances which emphasize indecent movements are to be regarded as obscene.

VIII. Religion
1. No film or episode may throw ridicule on any religious faith.

2. Ministers of religion in their character as ministers of religion should not be used as comic characters or as villains.

3. Ceremonies of any definite religion should be carefully and respectfully handled.

IX. Locations
The treatment of bedrooms must be governed by good taste and delicacy.

X. National Feelings
1. The use of the Flag shall be consistently respectful.

2. The history, institutions, prominent people and citizenry of other nations shall be represented fairly.

XI. Titles
Salacious, indecent, or obscene titles shall not be used.

XII. Repellent Subjects
The following subjects must be treated within the careful limits of good taste:
1. Actual hangings or electrocutions as legal punishments for crime.
2. Third degree methods.
3. Brutality and possible gruesomeness.
4. Branding of people or animals.
5. Apparent cruelty to children or animals.
6. The sale of women, or a woman selling her virtue.
7. Surgical operations.

Reasons Supporting the Preamble of the Code

I. Theatrical motion pictures, that is, pictures intended for the theatre as distinct from pictures intended for churches, schools, lecture halls, educational movements, social reform movements, etc., are primarily to be regarded as ENTERTAINMENT.

Mankind has always recognized the importance of entertainment and its value in rebuilding the bodies and souls of human beings.

But it has always recognized that entertainment can be a character either HELPFUL or HARMFUL to the human race, and in consequence has clearly distinguished between:

a. Entertainment which tends to improve the race, or at least to re-create and rebuild human beings exhausted with the realities of life; and

b. Entertainment which tends to degrade human beings, or to lower their standards of life and living.

Hence the MORAL IMPORTANCE of entertainment is something which has been universally recognized. It enters intimately into the lives of men and women and affects them closely; it occupies their minds and affections during leisure hours; and ultimately touches the whole of their lives. A man may be judged by his standard of entertainment as easily as by the standard of his work.

So correct entertainment raises the whole standard of a nation.

Wrong entertainment lowers the whole living conditions and moral ideals of a race.

Note, for example, the healthy reactions to healthful sports, like baseball, golf; the unhealthy reactions to sports like cockfighting, bullfighting, bear baiting, etc.

Note, too, the effect on ancient nations of gladiatorial combats, the obscene plays of Roman times, etc.

II. Motion pictures are very important as ART.

Though a new art, possibly a combination art, it has the same object as the other arts, the presentation of human thought, emotion, and experience, in terms of an appeal to the soul through the senses.

Here, as in entertainment,

Art enters intimately into the lives of human beings.

Art can be morally good, lifting men to higher levels. This has been done through good music, great painting, authentic fiction, poetry, drama.

Art can be morally evil it its effects. This is the case clearly enough with unclean art, indecent books, suggestive drama. The effect on the lives of men and women are obvious.

Note: It has often been argued that art itself is unmoral, neither good nor bad. This is true of the THING which is music, painting, poetry, etc. But the THING is the PRODUCT of some person's mind, and the intention of that mind was either good or bad morally when it produced the thing. Besides, the thing has its EFFECT upon those who come into contact with it. In both these ways, that is, as a product of a mind and as the cause of definite effects, it has a deep moral significance and unmistakable moral quality.

Hence: The motion pictures, which are the most popular of modern arts for the masses, have their moral quality from the intention of the minds which produce them and from their effects on the moral lives and reactions of their audiences. This gives them a most important morality.

1. They reproduce the morality of the men who use the pictures as a medium for the expression of their ideas and ideals.

2. They affect the moral standards of those who, through the screen, take in these ideas and ideals.

In the case of motion pictures, the effect may be particularly emphasized because no art has so quick and so widespread an appeal to the masses. It has become in an incredibly short period the art of the multitudes.

III. The motion picture, because of its importance as entertainment and because of the trust placed in it by the peoples of the world, has special MORAL OBLIGATIONS:

A. Most arts appeal to the mature. This art appeals at once to every class, mature, immature, developed, undeveloped, law abiding, criminal. Music has its grades for different classes; so has literature and drama. This art of the motion picture, combining as it does the two fundamental appeals of looking at a picture and listening to a story, at once reaches every class of society.

B. By reason of the mobility of film and the ease of picture distribution, and because the possibility of duplicating positives in large quantities, this art reaches places unpenetrated by other forms of art.

C. Because of these two facts, it is difficult to produce films intended for only certain classes of people. The exhibitors' theatres are built for the masses, for the cultivated and the rude, the mature and the immature, the self-respecting and the criminal. Films, unlike books and music, can with difficulty be confined to certain selected groups.

D. The latitude given to film material cannot, in consequence, be as wide as the latitude given to book material. In addition:

a. A book describes; a film vividly presents. One presents on a cold page; the other by apparently living people.

b. A book reaches the mind through words merely; a film reaches the eyes and ears through the reproduction of actual events.

c. The reaction of a reader to a book depends largely on the keenness of the reader's imagination; the reaction to a film depends on the vividness of presentation.

Hence many things which might be described or suggested in a book could not possibly be presented in a film.

E. This is also true when comparing the film with the newspaper.

a. Newspapers present by description, films by actual presentation.

b. Newspapers are after the fact and present things as having taken place; the film gives the events in the process of enactment and with apparent reality of life.

F. Everything possible in a play is not possible in a film:

a. Because of the larger audience of the film, and its consequential mixed character. Psychologically, the larger the audience, the lower the moral mass resistance to suggestion.

b. Because through light, enlargement of character, presentation, scenic emphasis, etc., the screen story is brought closer to the audience than the play.

c. The enthusiasm for and interest in the film actors and actresses, developed beyond anything of the sort in history, makes the audience largely sympathetic toward the characters they portray and the stories in which they figure. Hence the audience is more ready to confuse actor and actress and the characters they portray, and it is most receptive of the emotions and ideals presented by the favorite stars.

G. Small communities, remote from sophistication and from the hardening process which often takes place in the ethical and moral standards of larger cities, are easily and readily reached by any sort of film.

H. The grandeur of mass settings, large action, spectacular features, etc., affects and arouses more intensely the emotional side of the audience.

In general, the mobility, popularity, accessibility, emotional appeal, vividness, straightforward presentation of fact in the film make for more intimate contact with a larger audience and for greater emotional appeal.

Hence the larger moral responsibilities of the motion pictures.

Reasons Underlying the General Principles

I. No picture shall be produced which will lower the moral standards of those who see it. Hence the sympathy of the audience should never be thrown to the side of crime, wrong-doing, evil or sin.

This is done:

1. When evil is made to appear attractive and alluring, and good is made to appear unattractive.

2. When the sympathy of the audience is thrown on the side of crime, wrongdoing, evil, sin. The same is true of a film that would thrown sympathy against goodness, honor, innocence, purity or honesty.

Note: Sympathy with a person who sins is not the same as sympathy with the sin or crime of which he is guilty. We may feel sorry for the plight of the murderer or even understand the circumstances which led him to his crime: we may not feel sympathy with the wrong which he has done. The presentation of evil is often essential for art or fiction or drama. This in itself is not wrong provided:

a. That evil is not presented alluringly. Even if later in the film the evil is condemned or punished, it must not be allowed to appear so attractive that the audience's emotions are drawn to desire or approve so strongly that later the condemnation is forgotten and only the apparent joy of sin is remembered.

b. That throughout, the audience feels sure that evil is wrong and good is right.

II. Correct standards of life shall, as far as possible, be presented.

A wide knowledge of life and of living is made possible through the film. When right standards are consistently presented, the motion picture exercises the most powerful influences. It builds character, develops right ideals, inculcates correct principles, and all this in attractive story form.

If motion pictures consistently hold up for admiration high types of characters and present stories that will affect lives for the better, they can become the most powerful force for the improvement of mankind.

III. Law, natural or human, shall not be ridiculed, nor shall sympathy be created for its violation.

By natural law is understood the law which is written in the hearts of all mankind, the greater underlying principles of right and justice dictated by conscience.

By human law is understood the law written by civilized nations.

1. The presentation of crimes against the law is often necessary for the carrying out of the plot. But the presentation must not throw sympathy with the crime as against the law nor with the criminal as against those who punish him.

2. The courts of the land should not be presented as unjust. This does not mean that a single court may not be presented as unjust, much less that a single court official must not be presented this way. But the court system of the country must not suffer as a result of this presentation.

Reasons Underlying the Particular Applications

I. Sin and evil enter into the story of human beings and hence in themselves are valid dramatic material.

II. In the use of this material, it must be distinguished between sin which repels by it very nature, and sins which often attract.

a. In the first class come murder, most theft, many legal crimes, lying, hypocrisy, cruelty, etc.

b. In the second class come sex sins, sins and crimes of apparent heroism, such as banditry, daring thefts, leadership in evil, organized crime, revenge, etc.

The first class needs less care in treatment, as sins and crimes of this class are naturally unattractive. The audience instinctively condemns all such and is repelled.

Hence the important objective must be to avoid the hardening of the audience, especially of those who are young and impressionable, to the thought and fact of crime. People can become accustomed even to murder, cruelty, brutality, and repellent crimes, if these are too frequently repeated.

The second class needs great care in handling, as the response of human nature to their appeal is obvious. This is treated more fully below.

III. A careful distinction can be made between films intended for general distribution, and films intended for use in theatres restricted to a limited audience. Themes and plots quite appropriate for the latter would be altogether out of place and dangerous in the former.

Note: The practice of using a general theatre and limiting its patronage to "Adults Only" is not completely satisfactory and is only partially effective.

However, maturer minds may easily understand and accept without harm subject matter in plots which do younger people positive harm.

Hence: If there should be created a special type of theatre, catering exclusively to an adult audience, for plays of this character (plays with problem themes, difficult discussions and maturer treatment) it would seem to afford an outlet, which does not now exist, for pictures unsuitable for general distribution but permissible for exhibitions to a restricted audience.

I. Crimes Against the Law
The treatment of crimes against the law must not:

1. Teach methods of crime.
2. Inspire potential criminals with a desire for imitation.
3. Make criminals seem heroic and justified.

Revenge in modern times shall not be justified. In lands and ages of less developed civilization and moral principles, revenge may sometimes be presented. This would be the case especially in places where no law exists to cover the crime because of which revenge is committed.

Because of its evil consequences, the drug traffic should not be presented in any form. The existence of the trade should not be brought to the attention of audiences.

The use of liquor should never be excessively presented. In scenes from American life, the necessities of plot and proper characterization alone justify its use. And in this case, it should be shown with moderation.

II. Sex
Out of a regard for the sanctity of marriage and the home, the triangle, that is, the love of a third party for one already married, needs careful handling. The treatment should not throw sympathy against marriage as an institution.

Scenes of passion must be treated with an honest acknowledgement of human nature and its normal reactions. Many scenes cannot be presented without arousing dangerous emotions on the part of the immature, the young or the criminal classes.

Even within the limits of pure love, certain facts have been universally regarded by lawmakers as outside the limits of safe presentation.

In the case of impure love, the love which society has always regarded as wrong and which has been banned by divine law, the following are important:

1. Impure love must not be presented as attractive and beautiful.

2. It must not be the subject of comedy or farce, or treated as material for laughter.

3. It must not be presented in such a way to arouse passion or morbid curiosity on the part of the audience.

4. It must not be made to seem right and permissible.

5. It general, it must not be detailed in method and manner.

III. Vulgarity; IV. Obscenity; V. Profanity; hardly need further explanation than is contained in the Code.

VI. Costume
General Principles:

1. The effect of nudity or semi-nudity upon the normal man or woman, and much more upon the young and upon immature persons, has been honestly recognized by all lawmakers and moralists.

2. Hence the fact that the nude or semi-nude body may be beautiful does not make its use in the films moral. For, in addition to its beauty, the effect of the nude or semi-nude body on the normal individual must be taken into consideration.

3. Nudity or semi-nudity used simply to put a "punch" into a picture comes under the head of immoral actions. It is immoral in its effect on the average audience.

4. Nudity can never be permitted as being necessary for the plot. Semi-nudity must not result in undue or indecent exposures.

5. Transparent or translucent materials and silhouette are frequently more suggestive than actual exposure.

VII. Dances
Dancing in general is recognized as an art and as a beautiful form of expressing human emotions.

But dances which suggest or represent sexual actions, whether performed solo or with two or more; dances intended to excite the emotional reaction of an audience; dances with movement of the breasts, excessive body movements while the feet are stationary, violate decency and are wrong.

VIII. Religion
The reason why ministers of religion may not be comic characters or villains is simply because the attitude taken toward them may easily become the attitude taken toward religion in general. Religion is lowered in the minds of the audience because of the lowering of the audience's respect for a minister.

IX. Locations
Certain places are so closely and thoroughly associated with sexual life or with sexual sin that their use must be carefully limited.

X. National Feelings
The just rights, history, and feelings of any nation are entitled to most careful consideration and respectful treatment.

XI. Titles
As the title of a picture is the brand on that particular type of goods, it must conform to the ethical practices of all such honest business.

XII. Repellent Subjects
Such subjects are occasionally necessary for the plot. Their treatment must never offend good taste nor injure the sensibilities of an audience.

Love after Dinner

First let me say that I am grateful for all of the men in my life that have spent time with me and continue to support me... I think that it is quite amazing at how RELATIONSHIPS NEVER END - at least for me...

But Chrissy, (that is me - I am talking to myself) everything comes to an end! I respond: Does it really? or does it just go on a different path on the conveyor belt of life just waiting for it's rotation? It would be nice to have a commitment and see who can go the longest without arguing ... I don't think that I have had a serious boyfriend in quite a while. I have on the other hand, have had plenty of pretend "'good enough for right now" men. I also have half a dozen "up all night covered in sweat" play partners and a few sleep over "best friends forever" cuddle bunnies as well.

A LIFE WITHOUT LOYALTY...I MEAN ROYALITY...as in Prince Charming. That is probably more my fault because I am such an emotional person and take everything way to seriously which only the most sacred of men can handle. And there is nothing more erotic than the expression of raw emotion. I do have to compartmentalize all of my men with labels so I know what they are and what they are good for. I must protect myself, my emotions, and my time. They always come back yes that is not only my mantra but the Facts of Life take the good take the bad and there you have..Love hate FEAR confidence jealousy competition - not with other girls but with the very men I invite into my home office.

AT SOME POINT PEOPLE NEED A BREAK...too much of a good thing creates a stomach ache yes ladies we are all a different flavor of ice-cream and you have to make sure your men have a full meal first before they eat desert. I myself can be around someone for long consistent periods of time and although i am annoyed with them I don't necessarily opt for my private time which i probably should do more.

Of course it DOES take some time of "doing your own thing" so you don't accidently loose your identity and find yourself smelling wet towels to figure out which one is yours. We all need quiet time to settle your thoughts... and who doesn't love quiet time so you can talk yourself. But what happens when you know who you are and you have spent your whole life not only identifying your essence but building websites and making business cards to take it to the next level. Well I am at that level all alone just like the bubble in lime green liquid. That reminds me I am going to start dating men in construction. Send me a message if you would like to build something.

I have this habit of getting a triple latte with extra whip cream..every day .. even if I have the day off.. sometimes twice a day. It doesn't seem like an expensive habit but when you combine it with the sultry cigarette smoke in the background of my stir it adds up. I love being in my own world in my home..always decorating always editing. I have got to make myself get out of the house..what do you mean? I actually have to make myself do things - no one is going to do it for me or make me do it.. of course i don't mean make me, no one makes you do anything.

What I meant to say is inspire me be next to me talk to me walk with me hold me hand periodically through the day.. For some reason I am just realizing this right now for the first time in my life. I have always been surrounded by people and now, for this last year I have been alone and by myself.. my coffee is my buddy.. of course I do live next door to muddy waters the very place where I was re-united with my La Conchita Family two years before the landslide and was sold by our one of our Burning Man Vixens only to be bought by a my father's best friend which later hosted his funeral service..

all so convenient I can do so many things right next to my door yes but it has created something I am trying to break free from. After spending three months in Europe I feel somewhat accomplished since traveling through Europe was my big goal in LIFE!!!

I even moved to Los Angeles for three months with a pretend boyfriend (he was so into the game of pretend actually created feelings of hate towards me) but that is another blog. LA not my scene..I love working with video and television has a lot of power but it is not who I am .. so I got the hell out of LLEH Angeles and am back .. Luckily I kept my SB apartment while I was living in LA... it was for pretend after all :)

Yes my blogs will have more content and information ... this is my first and I am treating this as my journal ... a secret diary for all to read.. exciting stuff to read if you are patient enough it will happen.. my life really isn' t that boring.
